    The Grey Barn on Martha’s Vineyard is a bustling and lively place to work. We’re a small, diversified New England family farm where talented people come together to create great food from the land that surrounds us. Our bakery is situated in the main barn on the property and creates baked goods for our farmstand. We specialize in naturally leavened breads and laminated pastries. All our products are made utilizing regionally grown and freshly milled flours provided by Ground Up Grain in Holyoke, MA.

    The Lead Bread Baker is responsible for producing and executing all bread products for the farmstand. Must have knowledge of both yeasted and naturally leavened breads. This position includes executing all aspects of bread making, from scaling and mixing, to proofing and baking. You will work closely with the Bakery Manager when planning weekly production and managing bread pars for the farmstand.

    The right candidate will:

    • Have extensive knowledge and enthusiasm about working with stone-milled, fresh, regionally grown flour.
    • Be able to work efficiently and independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a team. 
    • Be detail oriented, positive, and adaptable.
    • Have 1-2 years of leadership experience.
    • Have knowledge of and experience working with electric steam injection ovens.

     Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Scaling, Mixing, Dividing, Proofing/Retarding, Scoring, and Baking all loaves produced for the farmstand.
    • Feeding of sourdough culture and building of levains for the following days mix
    • The cleaning and sanitation of the bakery production floor and all associated equipment
    • The documentation and filling out of all production and cleaning logs.
    • The completion of all dishes and cleaning and sanitization of the dish area
    • Maintain a standard of cleanliness and safety in the bakery.
    • Collaborating with Head Baker on seasonal product offerings

    Essentials:

    • You love baking and learning about food.
    • You are excited to create beautiful, visually appealing food.
    • You work well with other team members, are an effective communicator, punctual.
    • You are organized and maintain a clean work area.
    • Able to stand on feet for long periods of time.
    • Able to work in a hot, humid, wet, cold and/or damp environment.
    • Able to adhere to health and safety regulations.

    Prerequisites:

    • A minimum of two years of production baking experience
    • A knowledge and understanding of all types of bread, with an emphasis on naturally leavened breads.
    • Knowledge of and experience working with steam injection ovens
    • Must love working in a team environment.
    • Be able to repeatedly lift 50 lbs. throughout the day and work on your feet.

    Need to know:

    • Hours shift seasonally.
    • IRA benefits after 1 year.
    • Overtime benefits after 40 hours.
    • Grey Barn is a non-smoking farm.
